Youth sessions

Our youth sessions combine different activities to suit the individual or group needs, energy levels, mood, interests, learning objectives and challenges.  Each session, or block of sessions, is planned in consultation with the young people and their carers/teachers, but at Downswood Care Farm, we pride ourselves on being able to adapt as we go, to ensure that each session is as enjoyable and valuable as possible.  Our session options are detailed below.

Our animal care sessions focus on horses and alpacas and are designed to develop young people’s confidence, empathy, and responsibility.  In a safe and supportive environment, they will learn how to communicate with animals, and to understand and provide for their needs.

Our arts and crafts sessions aim to help young people express
themselves and improve their mental health and wellbeing.  We use a
range of materials, often foraging for them together from our site, and
we use techniques suitable for all abilities, which stimulate creativity
and imagination.

Our gardening sessions offer young people the opportunity to connect
with nature and learn about plants, fruits, and vegetables.  We encourage
them to get their hands dirty and, by experiencing the satisfaction of
growing their own produce, we hope to promote an interest in food and nutrition.

Regular 2-hour one-to-one sessions, usually booked in 6-week blocks, are designed to give a young person the time and space to really get to know our team, animals and site.  Planning activities with the young person and their teachers/carers, we work together to build practical skills, confidence, mental resilience and empathy.  Over 6 weeks our aim is for participants to progress in their learning and personal development, to a position where they are ready to join a group session, or enrol with another provider, to broaden their experience.

Small group short course
Cost:  £240 per person
for 3 week course

Short course, group sessions offer three 2-hour sessions for 2-3 participants and are ideal for young people who are looking to develop their team-working and social confidence, but are comfortable working alongside others.  Sharing tasks builds co-operation and negotiating skills, stimulates conversation and encourages participants to be patient with, and helpful to,  each other.  Being away from high-pressure, stressful environments gives young people an opportunity to share thoughts and feelings more freely, without fear of judgement.

** We are very happy to discuss more personalised options, for those who feel they may not fit into these session structures.  Tailor-made sessions will be costed according to duration and group size.   To refer a young person or to  discuss our youth session further, please contact Clare Smallman.
